Trying to come up with a great story idea, trying to snag an agent, trying to get published, trying to gain a readership – none of these things is easy. Theoretically, and sometimes in reality, our efforts compete with those of other writers, who are sometimes our friends. Despite all that, I’ve found more support, more generosity of spirit, more camaraderie than I ever expected, in the cyber world of writers. Twitter, Facebook, blogging, and writers’ forums have all yielded new friends. In some ways it’s a very small world.
This week I was deeply touched by another writer’s kind gesture.
I “met” Stacey Lee during PitchWars where she was a mentor and I was a contestant. While trying to figure out which mentor would be most likely to choose me, I stalked Stacey’s blog, and tweet-chatted with her about her mom (reminded me of my own mother, who though no longer in this world, remains a strong presence in my inner one). Ultimately I decided my ms wasn’t really what Stacey was looking for, but I still kept up a casual twitter friendship with her because I liked her. By the way, my ms wasn’t what any of the mentors I chose was looking for either. Contests were a very hit or miss thing for me…
A little over a week ago Stacey posted something on Twitter and said the first 5 replies would get a little surprise. It was all enticingly mysterious, so I jumped on it. She DM’d me and asked me for my mailing address. The suspense thickened. I eagerly awaited a bookmark related to her novel, or maybe an ARC.
Instead, she sent me this.
And a very sweet note, saying she’d stalked my blog (*flattered, blushes*) to see what sorts of things I enjoy. She noted that I like vintage jewelry. This little turtle comes from Nice, France-where she bought him nine years ago. She said he would remind me that “slow and steady wins the race”.
I’ve named him Rémy, which means “oarsman”.
Because a boat’s journey is accomplished stroke by stroke, just the way a novel is written.

I would simply like to “love” this post, and not have to leave a comment to let you know that I do, in fact, “love” it. …So much resonates with my experience of writing and finding writer friends online, some of whom I know I will one day meet in person. No other word does justice to the gestalt of yesness I felt in reading the unadorned truth of writing a novel, and receiving an unexpected gift of camaraderie.
Thank you, Sevigne! That is an absolutely lovely response. I’m glad you’re one of my online writer-friends 🙂
Very nice — a turtle is the PERFECT reminder that all writers should have… slow and steady wins the race 🙂
Glad you’ve been able to make some good friends here as well. Now if we could just get them on #ThurdaysChildren……………..
Thanks for sharing!
Working on it, John, lol. Hoping we MAY see a couple of new faces this week 😀
LOL. I just noticed the new call to action at the top, too. Ah well….
And see, we do have one new “recruit” this week 🙂 I’m still hoping for a couple more, if not this week, then next 🙂
Awesome! Yeah I saw. Hopefully they’re keepers.
(And we need to teach Tamara how to input the Linky in her posts… lol)
I’ve also been amazed, humbled, and honored by the support and camaraderie I’ve found in the writerly world. Rémy is so awesome, as is Stacey, apparently. 🙂
Yes, Stacey is awesome. You’re one of my heroes too-you give so much to WU and always have encouraging words for everyone, wherever they are on the writing journey.
This is such a cool and inspiring gesture! Hope you’re having a great writing week 🙂
Well, I’m having a good writing week in terms of social media-but I really SHOULD be writing other things, like revisions 🙂 Hope you’re also having a good week 🙂
That is the sweetest story!! Stacy Lee sounds awesome. My Pitch Wars mentor, Kim Chase, has been amazing too. We knew each other before now, but not very well. I still don’t know her as well as I’d like but if I don’t get a single request out of PitchWars, it’s okay–cause I got something way better. 😉
Glad you found a new friend!! I’ll definitely be participating in Thursdays Children this week. 🙂 And I LOVE turtles. haha…Remy is a very cute name for him.
Kim IS amazing. She also took a personal interest in me during a couple of contests and provided much-needed encouragement. You are LUCKY to have her as a friend and mentor. Looking forward to your post and good luck with PitchWars!!
I love this post! And what a gift! Turtles are very inspirational.
Thanks, and thanks for joining Thursday’s Children too 🙂
It’s wonderful to gain a new friend and I love knowing I’m not alone–I’m where you are trying and trying in this writing quest. Thanks.

Well, I’ve said it before – but I’ll say it again – I think 2013 will be a GREAT year for Thursday’s Children 😀
I’ll be honest – this post made me tear up a little (yep, I’m *that* girl). There is absolutely nothing like the support and friendship of other writers. I feel insanely lucky to have my friends and to be part of Thursday’s Children. Wear Remy with pride and know that we’re all pulling for you and your stories!
Oh, thank you! I think the same is true for all of us, we root for each other with full and sometimes painful knowledge of just how hard this journey can be.
How perfect! That’s so sweet. 🙂
Love love love this! So true and inspirational and how great is that turtle?!
That turtle is fabulous. I need to go stalk your blog, to see if there are any new “developments”.
Nothing new (waiting to hear back on 3 requests), BUT thanks for stopping by and reading my wee lil’ short story 🙂 ! Gonna jump on the Thursday’s Children hop, but your linky isn’t showing up for me…will investigate further though.
Nevermind – got it!
Wow, THREE!!! That’s fantastic!!!
Remy is adorable! Such a sweet story. And the turtle tactics are paying off!
